-Take pictures of the classroom, teacher, playground, office, and the front of the building to review before school starts.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten!

The first day of school is looming ever nearer. For some kids, this is routine, and this is not the first time they are going back to school. They are looking forward to a new year, seeing old friends and meeting their teachers, taking that first swipe at a fresh spiral notebook with a new Nº 2. For the littlest, this is an entirely new experience. They have never been to school and there are so many things that are unknown.
I remember my first day of kindergarten... The school was so big, the faces new... I had no idea what to expect. How would I know for sure that the teachers wouldn't loose me? Would I remember my bus? Would my bus driver miss my stop or forget the way to my house? Would the other kids like me? It is funny, now as an adult, these things seem so silly, in fact, I have since visited my elementary school and it seems so small. But for the first-timers, the whole experience is scary.
I wanted to find out firsthand the ways we as parents can help our soon-to-be kindergartners prepare for school. I spoke with Maria Langowski who is the kindergarten teacher at Central Elementary School. She has been teaching for several years and had a lot of really great advice, not only about helping our 5 year olds feel secure in this new adventure, but ways we can help them be prepared academically.

-First off, its a really great idea to visit the school where your child will attend and meet their teacher. This helps little kids know not only WHERE they will attend school, but WHO will be filling the new role of educator/parent/friend when they are not with you. Then, talk about the experience. Where are the bathrooms? Who can you ask for help? Where's the lunchroom? What will the routine of the day look like?

-The next bit of advice she gave me was something I had never thought of. In the days leading up to school, announce the school schedule as you go through the day. Say, "Its 7:45! This is when your school day starts!" Or, "Do you know that at 10:30 you'll have gym class?" And finally, "Its 2:10, and I'll be waiting outside the front door of your school to pick you up."

-Drive the bus routes or walk the route to school several times.

-Ask the school secretary for a list of other children in your child's class. Set up a play date with another child so your kindergartner will see a familiar face on the first day of school.

-Our summer schedules are full of late nights and relaxed mornings, however, this isn't quite how the school year goes! If you haven't started going to bed earlier and getting back into a routine, do it now!

-Stress reading! Reading is such a vital part of school and is a basic academic building block. Maria suggests reading 15 minutes a day with your child and encouraging "pretend reading," where your child "reads" to you by making up stories from the pictures in the books. If you show that you are interested in reading, your child will see that it is important for him too.

-Work with them in name writing, if you haven't started already. Make sure only the first letter is capitalized!

-Think about life with math on the brain. I myself am not a fan of math, however, the most algebra illiterate such as myself will be able to count the number of blocks to the grocery store, the amount of trees in the front yard, or how many steps it takes to get from the Target entrance to the toy section!

-Children will need to become more independent over the first year of school so make sure they have good bathroom habits, can tie shoes, and zip zippers on their backpacks. Have them help out with setting the table, cooking dinner or making cookies, (Come to think of it, you just might use math in this situation too...) or help dad with yard work. All of this will promote independence and and sense of ownership.

-And last but not least, reassure kids that they will have fun! We have tried to stress this to our about-to-be kindergartner, but it didn't really sink in until his uncle told him that he had a BLAST in kindergarten. And that's all he's been talking about since!

If you need more tips, don't hesitate to talk to your child's teacher, or ask the school secretary if you can borrow a copy of their school-readiness video. It was produced by our very own school system, so there will be familiar faces and places on the video.

creekside community playground

Last week I had the privilege to check out the new Creekside Community Playground in Rushford. Now, I understand that this blog is about things to do in our beloved WINONA, but hear me out, Rushford really isn't that far away from Winona. And I know your kids are going bonkers. Its almost the end of summer.
School supplies: purchased.
School shoes: waiting by the front door.
Aquatic Center: getting a little tired.
First day of school: can't come quick enough.

When a friend of mine suggested we take the kids to Creekside Community Playground in Rushford for a picnic, I was excited to get out of town, but wondering what the fuss was all about. I was pleasantly surprised. Apart from the fact that the weather could not have been more perfect the day we decided to go, the drive is short and gorgeous, and this park is brand new. And best of all, there is not ONE OUNCE of the dreaded pea gravel that plagues many parks in Winona. That is reason enough for me to travel to Seattle to play.
This park is not only brand new, but was built by the community of Rushford after their small town literally became an attraction akin to those at the Shedd Aquarium. The word on the street is that the children of Rushford helped to redesign it. And they did a pretty good job. There are lots and lots of play structures to play on, all quite safe, and many shady or sunny places to sit and watch the kids play. There are lots of different places to have a picnic; tables galore.
After us moms had talked ourselves out, and the kids had played till their heart's content, we scooted over to the Creamery for scoops of delicious ice cream. The Creamery might not be as schnazzy as a Coldstone, but the ice cream was yummy, the service was super, and the price was just right. (You can also get pizza there, but we opted for a picnic in the park.)
For a fun "summer's almost over" outing, head over to Rushford and check out their Park. You won't be dissapointed!

To get there, hop on 90 and take the Rushford exit. After a short drive, the park is about the first thing you'll see on the left. (How's that for some small town directions?)

Canoe Crazy Family Festival

Family Fest is this Saturday, August 15th from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s theme is “Canoe Crazy” to celebrate the exhibit: The Art of the Canoe. The event is free thanks to generous sponsorship by Winona National Bank.

In addition to seven craft activities, face painting, lunch and more- Wenonah Canoe will be there with over 15 canoes to allow families the opportunity to try out canoeing on the Mississippi River!

there are so many exciting opportunities to get involved in; too many to list here! look for your community education catalog in your mail box within the next few days. if its not there or you're not on their mailing list, swing on by the community education office located in central elementary (that's at 317 market street. you'll have to swing by bloedow's as long as you're so close.) the community education office will be happy to help you out and they have bunches of catalogs, just waiting to be taken home.

Is summer really almost over?

My mom always said that she saw summer as a big weekend; June was Friday night, July was Saturday, and August was Sunday. We're almost to Sunday already. Target's back to school area is filled with school supplies and we are already digging our school backpacks out of the closet. But, don't pack the swim suits away yet! Summer programs are winding down, and your back yard may be getting a little tired. You might be out of ideas for activities or getting a little bored, but this might be the perfect time to head out and try something you have been putting off.
Here are a couple options you may never have thought of or tried, and they are all within a few minutes of the Winona area:

-Check out our fantastic Aquatic Center or hit LaCanne Park's beach.
-Hike up to the Sugar Loaf. (Its not that hard, really!)
-Check out Garvin Heights. (For the less adventurous.)
-Try spelunking at Mystery Cave or Niagara Cave, both easily doable with small kids.
-Head to Pepin, WI and hunt down the "Little House in the Big Woods" Laura Ingalls Wilder wayside rest.
-On your way back, stop by the Nelson Cheese Factory for some gourmet cheese and a delicious scoop of ice cream. Yum!
-Speaking of ice cream, when was the last time you went to The Penguin Zesto or Lakeview Drive in?
-Or how about walking to Bloedow's for a sweet treat?
-Head on down to WSU. Did you know they have a koi pond and several fountains including a children's fountain? They have lots of lush grass to frolic on, too. Head to Mugby Junction on Huff Street for frozen hot chocolate or a frappe for a treat when you're done.
-Check out Levee Park.
-Check out Windom Park.
-Go to Lanesboro and head down their fantastic bike trails for some fun.
-Or just bike around our lake!
-For a special night out, head to the Trempealeau Hotel for one of their famous walnut burgers and enjoy the trains that roll by.
-Take a short trip up Hwy. 61 to Kellogg. Take a spin on the HAND CARVED carousel and check out their toys and toy museum!

So there are a few more ideas for you. Now get out there and make the most of the rest of the summer!

Parent's Night Out

Have you ever seen signs for Parent's Night Out around our community and wondered what the heck it is? Have you heard about it at ECFE and thought a free night out sounded good but were a little nervous to try it out? Or are you saying to yourself right now, Parent's Night Out?! Yes, please! Where do I sign up? Well, have no fear, and no need to sign up! I decided to get to the bottom of it and find out what Parent's Night Out is myself.

Parent's Night Out is a free (yes, free) service to the community provided by Community Bible Church. (They are located at 69 East Third St.) They do this as a simple service to the community because they care about families and children in Winona. They know it can be hard to find time to get away by yourself. It can also be hard to pay a sitter if you do find the time to get out for time away. Hopefully this will help out a little.

I contacted the church and talked to Craig Hensel, one of the pastors there. I asked him a few questions and he was happy to share some of the details of Parent's Night Out.

Who will be watching my kids? Eager adults and child care professionals. We can't wait to have a good time with your kids while you get a break!

Why are you guys doing this? We are passionate about families and children. We know it is difficult to find time for yourself and we want to help make that easier! We want parents to be able to have a free place to send their kids while they spend time together, kindling their marriage relationships or just getting a chance to recharge. You can even go grocery shopping or go home and clean your house if you want to!

Does it cost any money? No! This is a free service for you and your family. If you want to give a donation, though, that’s just fine.

If I give a donation, what will you do with the money? Your gift would help us make sure there are more Parent's Night Out in the future!

You’re a church. Will you “convert” my kid? No, that is not the point of Parent’s Night Out. We simply want to offer a service to the community. However, being that we are a church, your children may be exposed to biblical truths (we may watch a Veggie Tales or sing a bible-based song.)

And finally, what do the kids have to say about all of this? I asked two "regular attenders" of Parent's Night Out and here's what they had to say:

“I love it. And my favorite parts about it are watching Charlie Brown or Veggie Tales. And maybe like the snacks." -A.F. age 5

“I like it because we get to watch a movie and and we get to eat a snack; sometimes my friends from school come. And we get to stay up really late and we get to have fun!" -M.H. age 7

So what's not to love? Take advantage of a night out!

Berry Picking!

Sunday was a lovely, sunny, summer day. We decided to make the most of the afternoon by venturing to The Berry Patch, a quick drive down Highway 54 about halfway between Winona and Galesville, WI. We arrived and picked up our berry boxes, happily marching up and down rows and rows of fragrant strawberry plants. In Swedish, the word for strawberry is "jordgubbe" which literally means "earth fellow." It is hard not to feel a little closer to the earth when you go berry picking, if not a little more aware of how farmers feel when their hard work of planting finally pays off.

We didn't have to pick very long until we had over 5 lbs of delicious berries. Even though my two oldest are seven and five, we started the tradition of berry picking when they were much younger. If you've shied away from this activity because you think it might not appeal to a younger child, think again!! As my almost 6 year old helped to fill our boxes, it seemed like just last week when he toddled up the rows at age 2.5, filling his box one berry at a time.

We made our way to the counter to weigh and pay for our strawberries. The total price per pound was $1.15! The 70-something man who helped us was festooned with a colorful plastic lei and Mardi Gras beads. He informed us that he never washes a berry, unless it has dirt on it of course! I asked if these berries are sprayed with pesticides and he said, "No! We spray once before the berries pop out, and that's only for mold." I was happy to hear that!

They also have pick your own raspberries and I asked when they will be ready, he said on Labor Day. (If you want the already picked kind, those are ready the middle of August, our knowledgeable informant told us.)

If you want the strawberries, however, you've got to hurry! We were told that strawberry picking will only last until this Friday.

Be a Voice for Our Children

Leaders of the three budget committees in the legislature have called a series of town hall meetings to gather public feedback on the Governor's budget proposal. These committees decide how budget cuts are spread across state government and whether the state solves this crisis with cuts alone or whether new revenues are part of the solution. The state budget crisis will have a significant impact on the education of our children. Virtually every school district is planning for significant budget cuts for the 2009-2010 school year. It is critical that parents understand what is happening, how decisions are being made and the impact on our children. We must remind legislators that each child has one chance to be a first grader, one chance to be a senior. We must keep this long-term reality in mind as we try to fix a short term crisis. Please, learn what is happening, the proposal on the table for our schools, and let your voice be heard!

I have forgotten to post this event the past few months, so I wanted to let you know that Toddler Tuesday is this Tuesday, Dec. 9th from 10:30-Noon (come and go as you please) at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. This event is free and is a "guided wandering" morning of exploration for you and your toddlers. We will have a few hands-on art projects as well as toys and books throughout the galleries. A small snack is provided. We do ask that there is at least one adult per two toddlers. Hope to see you there!

Moms Supporting Moms
This is a group for moms of all ages and life experiences. Moms attend with their children and learn different parenting strategies, meet new friends and improve their self nurturing skills, in a supportive environment. Children will receive a fun early childhood classroom experience, while parents have time to meet in the parent education room.
Due to popular demand, we are now offering two different class times! The class will also meet weekly. This is a change from other years.
Registration is now required to attend the class for each term. Please fill out an ECFE registration form and return to the ECFE office.
On Wednesday afternoons, children from birth up to school age can attend with their mom. On Tuesday evenings, children from birth to age 8 can attend with their mom.

ELL Family School
A parenting and English class for immigrants and refugee adults and their preschool children. Parent-child time, parenting education, English and early childhood education is included in this learning school. There is also a home-visiting opportunity for participants in Family School that includes literacy activities, books, and one-on-one learning. Transportation assistance is available. Moms Supporting Moms
This is a group for moms of all ages and life experiences. Moms attend with their children and learn different parenting strategies, meet new friends and improve their self nurturing skills, in a supportive environment. Children will receive a fun early childhood classroom experience, while parents have time to meet in the parent education room.
Due to popular demand, we are now offering two different class times! The class will also meet weekly. This is a change from other years.
Registration is now required to attend the class for each term. Please fill out an ECFE registration form and return to the ECFE office.
On Wednesday afternoons, children from birth up to school age can attend with their mom. On Tuesday evenings, children from birth to age 8 can attend with their mom.

A parenting and English class for immigrants and refugee adults and their preschool children. Parent-child time, parenting education, English and early childhood education is included in this learning school. There is also a home-visiting opportunity for participants in Family School that includes literacy activities, books, and one-on-one learning. Transportation assistance is available. Join us for a program of Shakespearean proportions as company members of the Great River Shakespeare Festival read a storybook translation of The Tempest and then investigate some of the rocky seas in the paintings of the Jack Gray in the exhibit Men in Fickle Seas. Prepare to use your body and voices because we will engage in some acting of our own. This program is designed for children ages 5-9 accompanied by an adult. Admission is free, but space is limited. What is Early Childhood Family Education?
ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education) is a Winona Area Public Schools, Community Education program for all families with children from birth up to kindergarten.
ECFE offers weekly classes and special events for parents and their children.
ECFE is a fun place to learn and play in an informal setting and to meet other parents and children.

Winona Area Public Schools, Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) has been providing parent education and support to families in the Winona Community since 1979. The early years of a child's life are crucial. Intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth occurs rapidly from birth through age five. During these important years, parents are the first and most significant teachers. They direct the child's beginnings, shaping the child's perception of himself or herself and of the world.

It is the mission of ECFE to strengthen families, to help parents provide for their children's learning and development and to help young children develop to their full potential. We offer parenting education and support, a rich early childhood experience for children, family events, community resource information and a library of books, toys and learning materials for all families with children from birth through age five.

Witness and celebrate current wildlife as we remember the extinct passenger pigeon that last nested on the upper Mississippi in 1871. Two walks are planned: 10-11:30 am and 2-3:30 pm. What is ECFE?
*ECFE is a Winona Area Public Schools, Community Education program for all families
with children from birth up to kindergarten.

What are ECFE classes like?
*All classes begin with parent child activities where parents and children play together in
the early childhood room.
*Parents move to the parent room, facilitated by a licensed parent educator where they
will meet other parents, ask questions and share parenting ideas. Children play in the
early childhood room guided by a licensed early childhood teacher. They will make new
friends and enjoy art activities, music, gym time and snack.
*In baby and toddler classes, parents do not separate from their children. The baby group
is held in the parent education room and the toddler group is held in the early childhood
room.

The Mission of ECFE is to educate, empower, and support all families by supporting parents as their child's first teacher, by offering information about child development and parenting techniques, and by giving children opportunities to discover and learn.

ECFE Foundation Fund
The ECFE PTA has established a foundation fund in honor of our retired teachers who have worked so selflessly to support the mission of ECFE and by doing so have so positively impacted the lives of the families and children who attend our programs.
Donations to the ECFE Foundation will be used to expand and support the number of classes and programs offered by ECFE. Offset program expenditures such as playground equipment and classroom supplies. Support special projects and events. Support children and families in need.

Separation
If you are ready to begin to teach your child to successfully separate from you, ECFE is just the place to learn. Our teaching staff and support staff believe that separation is one of your child's important developmental milestones. We are happy to work with you and your child on a gentle plan to work towards a calm, comfortable experience where you separate from your child in a supportive atmosphere. For some children, separation is not an issue, for others, transitioning to a separate experience from their parent is a long and sometimes rocky road. ECFE is committed to supporting families in this developmental journey by offering separating and non separating classes and working with your child to meet his or her own emotional needs. Kindness, consistency and routine are all ingredients to a separation philosophy that we have been teaching families for more than 30 years. Are you ready? The following ECFE classes provide just the right atmosphere for you and your child to master this important developmental milestone.

Term 4 Thursday, March 20, 2008 by Noon
Confirmation cards will be mailed the following week with classes starting on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 for Term 4. If you miss our random draw deadline, you can call for availability of remaining classes at (507) 494-0913. Confirmation cards will only be sent to those who register by the random draw deadline.

Baby and Me
Babies sure bring joy and big changes to families. Join us for a weekly class for infants, 0-12 months, to explore topics relating to those bundles of joy! This is a relaxing class that also brings you information. You can ask all your baby questions and we'll also explore current philosophies on infant growth. We'll sing songs and have baby play time. Sibling care is available, please request with registration.

Moms Supporting Moms
This is a group for moms of all ages and life experiences. Moms attend with their children and learn different parenting strategies, meet new friends and improve their self nurturing skills in a supportive environment. The Moms Supporting Moms class is a collaborative between ECFE and Family Based Services with additional funding from the Winona Collaborative.

The PTA presents the second annual ECFE Sock Hop with music by the KookenMeier Family. Dance the night away with your young ones. Come to the Goodview Elementary gym and enjoy music, games, snacks and good family fun! All proceeds will go to support the ECFE PTA special events.

It's Sock Hop Time!

We're introducing one new change this year by turning the Cake Walk into a Cupcake Walk. Numbers on the walk will be replaced with colored shapes, with four winners every time! These changes are designed to make this game more family-friendly -- and more fun for little kids. Cupcake walk tickets are 25 cents each or 5 for $1.

FDA bans cold meds for kids under 2, considers ban for under age 12

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued a Public Health Advisory recommending that over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold products should not be used to treat infants and children less than 2 years of age because serious and potentially life-threatening side effects can occur from such use, according to an FDA press release. These include death, convulsions, rapid heart rates, and decreased levels of consciousness.

"These medicines, which treat symptoms and not the underlying condition, have not been shown to be safe or effective in children under 2," said Charles Ganley, M.D., director of the FDA's Office of Nonprescription Products. According to an Associated Press story on the move, "the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year reported that more than 1,500 babies and toddlers wound up in emergency rooms over a two-year period because of the drugs."

In October, the FDA's advisory board voted that the drugs were not effective and shouldn't be used in kids under age 6, according to the AP story. According to the FDA press release, the agency is continuing to review data regarding the use of OTC cold medicines in all children under age 12 prior to issuing a formal recommendation.

Pending completion of the FDA's ongoing review, parents and caregivers that choose to use OTC cough and cold medicines to children ages 2 to 11 years should:

Follow the dosing directions on the label of any OTC medication,
Understand that these drugs will NOT cure or shorten the duration of the common cold,
Check the "Drug Facts" label to learn what active ingredients are in the products because many OTC cough and cold products contain multiple active ingredients, and
Only use measuring spoons or cups that come with the medicine or those made specially for measuring drugs.

What is ECFE?
*ECFE is a Winona Area Public Schools, Community Education program for all families
with children from birth up to kindergarten.
*ECFE offers weekly classes and special events for parents and their children.
*ECFE is a fun place to learn and play in an informal setting and to meet other parents
and children.

What are ECFE classes like?
*All classes begin with parent child activities where parents and children play together in
the early childhood room.
*Parents move to the parent room, facilitated by a licensed parent educator where they
will meet other parents, ask questions and share parenting ideas. Children play in the
early childhood room guided by a licensed early childhood teacher. They will make new
friends and enjoy art activities, music, gym time and snack.
*In baby and toddler classes, parents do not separate from their children. The baby group
is held in the parent education room and the toddler group is held in the early childhood
room.

The Winona Area Public School District has scheduled the Institute for Environmental Assessment to be in our district with a Niton X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer on December 19 and 20 to identify toys containing lead. Toys identified as containing lead will be labeled and separated for disposal.

If parents would like to have their children’s toys inspected and tested for lead, they can bring them to Winona Senior High School, 901 Gilmore Ave., Winona MN 55987 between the hours of 5-8, PM on December 19, 2007 and December 20, 2007.

Do you often wonder how two children can be so different? Are some of the children in your care easy going, while others are stubborn and strong-willed? Is one child’s insistence at having her clothing “just so” driving you over the edge? Do you have some children who thrive on routine and others who live for adventure? There are many factors that shape a child’s personality, and this class, based largely on research by parenting expert Mary Sheedy Kurcinka, will look at a few of those, including in-born temperament, characteristics of introverts and extraverts, and provide ideas for accommodating those unique in-born aspects of a child’s personality. We will also spend a few minutes examining your personality type, and how that can shape your relationships with your children, as well.

It’s a tough year to be a toy-buying parent. In recent months, almost 25 million mostly Chinese-made toys have been recalled because they have dangerous amounts of lead or magnets—which can cause intestinal damage when swallowed—in them. Then there were Aqua Dots, pulled when it was discovered that the popular beads were coated with a toxic chemical that metabolizes into gamma hydroxy butyrate, or GHB—the date-rape drug. Last week California filed suit against 20 toy companies, alleging that they had knowingly exposed kids to unlawful levels of lead.

Help Us Make a Kid-Friendly Cookbook

The ECFE PTA is hoping to gather together a collection of recipes that are child-friendly, either those that children like to help cook or those they really like to eat. Quick and easy recipes are also a good bet. Please consider submitting more than one recipe. Our book will include the following sections:

Appetizers and Beverages
Soups and Salads
Side Dishes
Main Dishes
Breads
Desserts
What to Pack for Lunch
Kid-Friendly Cleaning Tips
Craft Recipes
This and That (a catch-all for recipes that don’t fit elsewhere)

The finished book will also include ECFE children’s artwork and will be available for purchase in the early spring.

Please turn in your recipes by Friday, December 14. You can submit recipes and make suggestions by e-mailing Jill Krase jillkrase ~at~ charter . net. (Replace the "~at~ with the
ppropriate keyboard symbol and remove spaces from her address, of course.) You may also pick up recipe forms at the ECFE office at Goodview School.

All recipes should include a title, the name of the person who submitted it, an ingredients list (be sure to include container sizes, e.g., a 16 oz can), and clear directions.

Sleep May Affect Postpartem Weight Loss

A new study finds that sleep, as elusive as it may be, may play an important role in helping women lose weight after the birth of a baby, according to MedPage Today:

OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 21 -- Women deprived of only a couple hours of sleep a night after the birth of a child may find it more difficult even a year later to lose weight gained during pregnancy.

New mothers who slept five hours or less per day when their babies were six months old were three times more likely to have retained at least 11 pounds at one year than those who slept seven hours per day, showed results of a large cohort study published in the November issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The sixth annual Winona Health Auxiliary Fantasy of Trees will be held on Friday, November 16, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and on Saturday, November 17, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Watkins Manor Great Hall, 175 East Wabasha Street.

The Fantasy of Trees will feature beautifully decorated holiday trees, which will be available for purchase by sealed bids. The themed trees have been donated and designed by various businesses, organizations and individuals. At the end of the silent auction, the highest bids will be accepted and the winners will be notified by phone. On Friday, entertainment will include Jean Smith on the Watkins Great Hall organ from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Emily Brom playing the flute from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

On Saturday, entertainment will include harpists Jonelle Moore, Kathy Geiger, Vickie Kunz and Barb Manahan from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., Taff Roberts reading a Child's Christmas in Wales at 2 p.m.., and Jean Smith on the Watkins Great Hall organ and Emily Brom playing flute throughout the day. Also on Saturday, Santa will visit from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Parents bring your cameras for a photo with Santa.

Raffle tickets to win a sleigh centerpiece, grapevine tree or a floral reindeer will be available for one dollar per ticket on both days. Proceeds from the sale will be used for Auxiliary projects including healthcare scholarships and a patient lift system. ECFE Parents Meet with School Nutrition Director on Chocolate Milk

Several parents from the Winona Early Childhood Family Education program attended a Wednesday morning meeting with Lyn Halvorson, the school nutrition director for the Winona Area Public Schools, to discuss chocolate milk in the schools. Margaret Schild, director of Winona Community Education, also attended the meeting in her role as co-chair of the school district’s Wellness Committee.

The meeting was prompted by some parents’ concerns about the amount of extra sugar contained in the flavored milk. The chocolate skim milk served to students in WAPS contains 14 more grams of sugar and 60 more calories than white skim milk, with the extra calories presumably coming from the added sugar.

The parents expressed several concerns about making chocolate milk available to students at meals (breakfast and lunch) and during kindergartener’s snack time. Their primary concern was that the amount of sugar contained in one serving of chocolate milk (26 grams, including the 12 grams of naturally occurring sugar from lactose) represents about half of the discretionary calories recommended by the USDA on its food pyramid website, mypyramid.gov, for active five-year-old children. The parents said they worried that providing young kids with that much sugar through one or more servings of chocolate milk made it much more likely that they would exceed their recommended daily caloric intake from discretionary fats and sugars, increasing the risk of childhood diabetes and obesity. They also asked whether providing sweetened milk at every meal establishes unhealthy eating habits, with kids who have had a sugary drink at every meal for years as kindergarteners and elementary students becoming more likely to “graduate” to mealtime soda pop as teenagers.

Ms. Halvorson presented extensive information supporting the widespread practice of offering flavored milk to school children. (Some of the information she presented can be found in the post, “Milk Facts.”) She pointed out that the consensus among nutritionists and medical professionals is that chocolate milk consumption is not harmful to children and actually provides substantial benefits. She said that most children do not receive nearly enough calcium on a daily basis to build healthy bones and teeth. But studies show that children are more likely to drink more milk when the milk is flavored or packaged attractively. For example, eliminating chocolate milk in the New York City public schools reduced students’ milk consumption by 10 percent. Many nutritionists and medical professionals say that the extra sugar contained in chocolate milk is not significant enough to be a health concern for most children, and is outweighed by the benefits of providing kids with more calcium.

Parents at the meeting asked whether experts’ assertions that the extra sugar is not a concern for most kids applies equally to very young children, such as kindergarteners, whose overall caloric intake is less than the average elementary age child. They asked whether the schools could investigate the possibility of replacing sugary chocolate milk with a lower-sugar chocolate milk. They also suggested that parents ought to have some control over whether their young children are allowed to have chocolate milk at school.

Ms. Halvorson raised some concerns about the practicality of having cafeteria staff monitor kids’ milk choices. However, she suggested that she would be willing to investigate the possibility of providing more parental control over kindergarteners’ chocolate milk consumption during their snack time. She also said she would investigate whether a lower-sugar chocolate milk exists.

The meeting was sponsored and facilitated by the Early Childhood Family Education PTA, which has not taken a formal position on the issue other than to raise parents’ concerns with school district officials.

Here are some facts about milk and kids, compiled by Lyn Halvorson, SNS, the school nutrition director for the Winona Area Public Schools:

More than half of the children ages 2-8 do not get the recommended daily servings of dairy.
More than three-quarters of the children ages 9-19 do not get the recommended daily servings of dairy.
The National Dairy Council, the School Nutrition Association, and the School Nutrition Foundation conducted a study and found that 97% of schools offer flavored milk. Over 70% of the milk consumed in schools is flavored.
Virtually all the calories in 100% juice and nearly one-half the calories in unflavored milk is from naturally-occurring sugars. See handout; fat-free white and 1% white contain 12 grams of naturally-occurring sugar, chocolate skim contains 26 grams (12 grams of naturally-occurring sugar and 14 grams of added sugar).
The importance of providing children with milk they like, and therefore will drink, was highlighted by the 2002 School Milk Pilot Test, which demonstrated that with simple product improvements – including flavors and packaging – milk consumption increased 37%.
A study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, showed that when compared to their peers, children who drank flavored milk drank more milk overall and are more likely to meet their calcium needs than those who did not.
Frank Greer, MD, FAAP, Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition states, “The AAP recommends that children eat three servings of milk, flavored milk, cheese or yogurt a day.”
Robert P. Heaney, MD, Professor at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska takes a realistic approach to flavored milk. “I favor milk consumption because of its many nutritional benefits. If there is a choices between flavored milk and no milk, there shouldn’t be any difficulty there; you have to go with the flavored milk because that is where you are going to get the nutrient package that you need.”
The kids who drank flavored milk in their diets reported higher milk intakes than those who drank plain milk. Source; Nutrient intakes and body measures of children and adolescents in the United States drinking flavored, plain or no milk. FASEB J 21:833.3
When it comes to flavored milk, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Dietetics Association and the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee agree that the added sugar in flavored milk does not negate milk’s many benefits. Specifically in regard to high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), there is very little different between sucrose, which is granulated sugar, and HFCS. Once absorbed, they are indistinguishable to the human body.
In a recent survey among 4,000 3 A-Day of Dairy moms, 92% said that they were comfortable with their children drinking flavored milk at school.

Infant cold medicines pulled from stores

Drug makers on Thursday voluntarily pulled kids' cold medicines off the market less than two weeks after the government warned of potential health risks to infants.
Products aimed at children under the age of two are being removed from store shelves due to "rare instantances of misuse" that could lead to accidental overdose, a trade group that represents over-the-counter drug makers said.
Cold medicines being withdrawn include: Johnson & Johnson Pediacare Infant Drops and Tylenol Concentrated Infants Drops, Wyeth's Dimetapp Decongestant Infant Drops, Novartis' Triaminic Infant & Toddler Thin Strips and Prestige Brands Holdings' Little Colds Decongestant Plus Cough.
